Scantle slate is a type of slate roofing that features larger, thicker tiles, often used for steeper pitches. Traditionally, in Cornwall this is reclaimed natural or Delabole slate.
The style of roofing creates a beautiful, authentic finish that just speaks of West Cornwall fishing villages and historic buildings. In our experience, it is most commonly employed on listed buildings and conservation areas where authorities have mandated its use.
Summit Roofing Solutions offers new installations, repairs and replacements in scantle slate roofing across Cornwall.
Scantle slate is a specialised roofing technique and the Summit team is fortunate enough to benefit from world experts in the field. The business owner Adam Palmer undertook specialist training with Viv Stratton, a leading authority on scantle slate, while studying his roofing qualifications.
We offer two scantle roofing techniques:
Wet lay, which is installed using a sand and mortar mix. This is a very specialised skill undertaken by only a select few roofing firms.
Dry lay. This is installed with a copper nail instead of lime mortar. If you are considering scantle roofing – or have been mandated to use this material – dry lay is a good choice if you want scantle slate at a cost-effective price. Talk to your local authority and see if dry lay is an option for you.
